Shopping, sports, spas, and beaches – for tourists, Cancun has it all. This coastal city in the state of Quintana Roo, on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, was purpose built for the tourist trade in the 1970s. Today it’s a party city, in the same vein as Ibiza, Dubai, and Las Vegas, being popular with the US spring break crowd. There are five-star resorts, exceptional cuisine, breathtaking beaches and crystal clear waters, and world famous Mayan ruins are just minutes away – with modern luxury and natural beauty served up side by side, it’s easy to see why Cancun is one of the most popular tourist hotspots on the Caribbean coast.

Things to Do in Cancun

It’s so easy to tailor your trip to Cancun to suit you. If you want to make the most of that coastal location and get out on the water you can hire windsurfers, jet skis, kayaks, motorboats and more, or simply enjoy swimming in the sea or Nichupte Lagoon. It’s impossible not to find a glorious beach here – all have turquoise waters and white powder sand. If music and local culture’s more your thing, head for the Zona Hotelera’s many nightclubs where you can dance the night away to salsa, cumbia, reggae, mariachi, hip-hop, electronic music and more. With a hire car it’s incredibly easy to explore the nearby Mayan cities of Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba, all of which are breathtaking examples of majestic ruined cities, drawing visitors to Mexico from all over the globe each year.

Top 3 Must See: Cancun

  • Shopping for Mexican crafts at Mercado Veintiocho

Driving Around Cancun

Jet into Cancun National Airport and you’ll find yourself in Mexico's second busiest airport, about 10 km (6 miles) from the hotel strip and 16 km (9 miles) southwest of downtown. You’ll also find plenty of car rental options here, although booking in advance online will lead to cheaper rates. Driving in Cancun is safe and easy, although during spring break the local police tend to have a habit of pulling tourists over for the most minor reasons – so do check that all of your rental vehicle’s lights are working when you set off. Trips out of Cancun by car that are an absolute must include Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba, Valladolid city and Cozumel, home to a national park.
