The city of Albufeira started to grow in size and popularity as a tourist hub in the 1960s, but its history goes way back to Roman times, and the ruins of a Roman acqueduct can still be seen in the town. It was later occupied by the Moors who did much to develop the city, and even its name derives from the Arabic al-Buhera. Driven out by the Portuguese King Alfonso in the 13th Century, the city has seen both disasters, in the form of several severe earthquakes, and prosperity, from its trading position on the coast. The city is now visited by thousands of the 5 million tourists who tour the Algarve every year. To explore the beaches and vineyards of the surrounding area a vehicle is essential, and car rental in Albufeira is easy to arrange through GoCarRental.com.
Things to Do in Albufeira
One of the busiest cities in the Algarve, Albufeira is enjoyed by many visitors for its stretches of golden sand, nightlife, and the colourful old fishermens’ quarters with bars and cafes lining the narrow streets. The beaches and water sports are what many come to the area for, and the principal beaches in Albufeira are Peneco and Praia des Pescadores. Peneco Beach is accessible from the city centre through a tunnel, and the sweep of golden sand is edged with an attractive promenade, and at one end the Xorino Grotto is worth exploring – supposedly the hiding place of the Moors who were driven out of the city by King Alfonso.
