Leeds is situated in West Yorkshire, and is the third largest city in the UK.  Long known for its universities and thriving youth culture, it’s also proud of its multicultural identity and aiming to become one of the greenest cities in the UK.  It has excellent transport links, with Leeds Bradford International Airport only 9 miles away.  The airport has grown rapidly and has just celebrated its three millionth passenger.  Leeds has a thriving cultural scene, including Opera North, Northern Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre.  Commercially it has seen prosperity grow over the past few years, and the opening of Trinity Leeds retail development has created one of the finest shopping centres in the UK.  Leeds is also within easy driving distance of the historic city of York and close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Things to Do in Leeds

There is a wealth of attractions for the visitor to the city both within Leeds and in the surrounding area, so organising car rental ahead of your stay in the city will give access to all the wonderful sights within easy driving distance.  Amongst these are Temple Newsham, a Tudor-Jacobean mansion house, and one of the most important stately homes in the country; Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills, which gives a vivid insight into the life of the worker in a Victorian woollen mill; and Kirkstall Abbey on the River Aire, one of the most complete examples of a medieval Cistercian Abbey in the UK.

Within the city itself, the new shopping centre of Trinity Leeds is a must to visit, and the Royal Armoury will fascinate children and adults alike with its displays of archery and demonstrations of how to put on a suit of chain-mail armour.  The thriving cultural life of the city is typified by the Grand Theatre, built in the 1890s in ornate and opulent style, but with a very current and contemporary programme of plays.

Drive Around Leeds

The route from Leeds Bradford Airport to the centre of Leeds is a 9 mile drive, and takes you through Kirkstall and Burley on the A65 giving a glimpse of future treats in store.  Car rental at Leeds Bradford Airport is available from a choice of companies based in the main terminal building.  Once mobile, it is worth spending at least a day exploring the Yorkshire Dales National Park – take the A65 back out of the city and pass the airport, taking in Ilkley and Burley in Wharfedale on the way.  Heading east out of the city on the A64 will bring you to the walled city of York, a 25 mile drive.
