What to do in Belgrade

Belgrade is Serbia’s capital city, with a population of almost 1.7 million people. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and it has become an important crossroads for transportation, mostly as a link between Western and Eastern Europe. The city is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. These two rivers surround Belgrade on three sides. Because of its location, it has been aptly surnamed “Balkan’s gate” and “Europe’s gateway.” A must-see in Belgrade is the huge fortress in Kalemegdan Park, from which you can enjoy a romantic view of the Sava joining the Danube – indeed, quite the postcard image. Belgrade is multifarious. Its artistic spirit can be noticed in the art galleries and museum of Kosan; the bohemian soul of the city can be found in Skadarlija, with some five hundred bars and clubs, some of which on barges; the sport spirit lies in Ada Ciganlija, one of the most beautiful city islands in the world; the business facet is in Novi Beograd, with its many shopping centres. It comes not as a surprise, then, that the eminent Lonely Planet guide selected Belgrade as number one city for fun and entertainment.

Driving near Belgrade

Renting a car in Belgrade enables you to enjoy a comfortable holiday and allows you to to visit such interesting spots near the city that would otherwise be out of reach. Just outside Belgrade you can find Zemun, a once independent city and now part of Belgrade’s municipality. The highest point in Zemun is Gardoš, from which you can see the whole Zemun, the Danube River, and the city center of Belgrade. Here you can also find a 36-meter-tall millenary tower, the Sibinjanin Janko’s Tower.

The most curious features in the area surrounding Gardoš are the presence of narrow passages and streets called “kaldrma” (pebbles) and the peculiar architecture. In Zemunski Kej (the quay) – on the Danube’s shores – you can find many restaurants with live-music performers, bars and clubs.

Besides, this place is perfect for walking in the middle of local fishermen and artists, surrounded by boats and art galleries. However, if you are into mountains, Avala is your cup of tea. This mountain lies sixteen kilometers south-east of Belgrade. On its peak, there are the Monument to the Unknown Hero, the Monument to the Soviet war veterans, as well as the Avala TV tower, rebuilt and now reaching the height of 204.5 meters. The latter is so far the tallest building in the Balkans of this kind, and from its top you can have an amazing panoramic view of Belgrade and the regions of Vojvodina and Šumadija.
