Lying on the Turquoise Coast, in the south of Turkey between Marmaris and Antalya, the lively market town of Fethiye is home to one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the Mediterranean. An earthquake in 1958 levelled the town, leaving behind only the remains of the ancient city of Telmessos. Today it has grown into one of the most prosperous places in the region, its natural beauty enhanced by restrictions on high-rise buildings. The prime attraction here is its crystal clear waters, its bay dotted with small islands being used in the latest Bond movie Skyfall.
Things to Do in Fethiye
With so many little islands so close at hand, getting out on the water is a must. You’ll find plenty of gulet cruises and boat trips available from Fethiye harbour, from hour-long rides to weekend getaways. About 15km south of Fethiye itself lies one of Turkey’s most beautiful and popular beaches, Ölüdeniz. Its waters are incredibly warm through summer, and conditions are perfect for snorkelling, parasailing, paragliding, canoeing and more. Check out the town centre too for some wonderful eateries and excellent food shopping at Fethiye’s Tuesday Farmer’s Market and daily fish market.
